#59061 It Is Well
It is December, 1873 and Horatio Gates Spafford stands on a ship deck in the north Atlantic. Staring into the turbulent waters, he realizes it’s been a mere two weeks since his wife and four daughters went down with the Ville du Havre on this very spot. Now, only his wife remains alive. His heart is torn between thanksgiving that he will soon be reunited with Anna and the sorrow of never seeing his girls again. Yet, somehow, his faith in the God who had been there for him in the past, led him to rush into his cabin and pen the words to the now familiar hymn, It is Well with My Soul.
When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows,
Whatever my lot thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
The precise thoughts which went through Spafford’s mind just before he wrote those words remain a mystery. But perhaps his eyes were drawn upward where soft but sure sunlight lay just behind the clouds. And that warmth, emanating from a God of love, promised that despite his spent emotions, despite the grief which threatened to dash his heart upon the rocks, his soul remained intact. And well.
Takeaway Thought: No matter what happens today or in the future, you can have confidence in Christ to know that all will be well with your soul. May you find, as the hymn writer did, comfort in knowing that your eternal destiny is fixed. Though today you may see through the glass darkly...someday you will see face to face. May your future be as bright as the promises of God.
